Art from the Dust Bowl
Who were some famous artists from the 1930's that either photographed, drew, painted, sculpted, etc. images of and/or surrounding the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression? Research and list at least three artists from the 1930's and provide an example of their work.
Photographers:
Dorothea Lange - Woman with children in tent. California. 1936
John Vachon - Farmer inspecting soil. Iowa 1940
Arthur Rothstein - A car chased by a "black blizzard". Texas Panhandle. March 1936.
Based on your research does any artwork or do any photographs stand out to you? Why? Choose one artist and one of their images that "speaks" to you and post it. Based on the image research both the artist the image. Provide a brief biography of who the artist is, where they worked during the Dust Bowl and their story in the 1930's. What does the image represent of the time? What does the image represent to you? Who is in the image? What is the image of? How do you relate personally to this image. Provide three additional images of their art work to give a sense of who the artist is and their work during the 1930's.
The photograph that stands our to me was a well-known one from Dorothea Lange, "Women with children in tent. California. 1936." Dorothea Lange was born in Hoboken, New Jersey, and studied and worked in photography until 1918 when she began to travel. And then hit the 1930s, when the Great Depression began and attracted Dorothea to record people's gloomy expressions and actions in photography, one of them being, "Women with children in tent." The photo portrays the expression of the woman reflecting about the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. She seems to be thinking about how much the Dust Bowl and Great Depression have affected her family, especially her children. It is reasonable to say this because of the economy crisis and a lot of people wondering if they can feed their family, or even themselves. People today would have a relatable expression to the woman in the photograph if they had a dramatic economic crisis like her. A few more examples of Dorothea Lange's photography of the Dust Bowl are:"Migrant family on road. June 1938," "Abandoned farm north of Dalhart, Texas. 1938," and "Migrant woman with children. California. May 1937."
