Character Analysis
As you read the story “Night” and explore what the Holocaust was keep a log of important characters as they are discussed in the text. Identify as much as you can about the person i.e. who they are, their role in the story, their relation to Elie, their age, occupation, outlook, etc.
Character Analysis are due Thursday, April 17th - NO LATE WORK FOR "NIGHT" WILL BE ACCEPTED OVER OR AFTER SPRING BREAK!
CHARACTERS:
1. Elie
- Elie is 12 year old Jewish boy from Sighet in the beginning
- Starts out with strong faith, but begins to doubt it as time goes on and lives in three different concentration camps
- Liberated by American troops
- Lost his father
- Won a Nobel Peace Price for "Night"
2. Elie’s father
- Shlomo Wiesel
- Has three daughters, one son
- He is also from Sighet
- He is a respected elder in the town, people going to him for advice
- He has a store, and has a wife and children
- He is fifty years old
- Passes away; became sick in camp and they kill him
3. Franek
- He wanted Elie's gold crown
- He was the foreman of Elie's kommando
- When he didn't get Elie's gold crown, he beats up Elie's dad
4. Gestapo
- Police officers
- Local police who enforce Hitler's rules
5. Idek
- He is the foreman in the depot
- He beats up Elie and Elie's father and hooks up with a polish girl
6. Juliek
- Violin player who was in the camp with Elie
- Passes away playing violin because he was playing Beethoven
7. Kapos
- Prisoners that helped the Nazi's keep control over other prisoners
- Supervisors and gave orders to prisoners
8. Madame Schachter
- She is a Jewish Woman
- She is insane and mad because she has been separated from her husband and two sons
- She is the first one to see the chimney and flames, the crematorium, of which no one believes
9. Moshe the Beadle
- The clown of Sighet
- Elie's mentor
- Teaches him the Talma and the Kalabah
10. Meir Katz
- Elie's father's friend
- Saves Elie when he was being strangled in the midle of the night
11. Dr. Mengele
- He is the concentration camp doctor
- He treats the prisoners like animals and does not take the prisoners seriously
- He does not show mercy
- Known as the Angle of death
12. Rabbi Elahou (and sons)
- Jewish prisoner who's son abandons him
- Elie hopes that he will never behave like Elahou's son
13. SS Officers
- Shootz Staffal
- They are German soldiers at the concentration camps
14. Stein
- He is a relative to Elie's family
- Helps them to survive and gives them food
- He was given hope by Elie that his family is alive
15. The dentist
- He is Jewish
- He allows Elie to delay his appointment
- He allows Elie to keep his gold tooth
- He is from Czechoslovakia
16. The French Girl
- She works in the depot with Elie
- She advises Elie to keep his anger and hold it in
- She tells Elie her biggest secret, that she was actually Jewish, she could speak German, and she had fake papers that said she was Aryan
17. Zalman
- One of Elie's fellow prisoners
- Trampled to death when they were on the way to Gleiwitz
18. Tzipora
- Elie's sister
- Burned to death with her mother in the crematorium
19. Tibi and Yossi
- They are brothers who lost their parents
- They act like twins and act very close because they lost their parents in Birkenau
- Born from Czechoslovakia
20. Akiba the Drumer
- Another inmate at the camp
- He does a lot of chants, singing, and tries to keep everyone's faiths alive
- He is the most optimistic
- He challenges Elie to keep his faith
