Define theme: What is theme as it is applied to a literary text?
Theme is defined as the main idea, central message, or a meaning of literary work which may be stated directly or indirectly
There are several themes discussed in the text To Kill a Mockingbird.
Choose a theme from the options below:
- Race
- Justice and Judgement
- Youth
- Morality and Ethics
- Fear
- Women and Femininity
- Family
- Compassion and Forgiveness
In your group work to together to define the theme as it pertains to the text. Each group member is responsible for providing 2-3 examples of the selected theme as exemplified in the text To Kill a Mockingbird. Quotes for each example should be provided and each person should provide an image or video to support the theme and their examples.
- A family is a group of people who are related to each other living under the same name. A family includes the extended family too; grandparents, cousins, and aunts & uncles.
Examples of the family theme being portrayed:
- is when Atticus addresses his children not to do anything inappropriate, "I don't want to hear of poker in any form again." (p. 56)
- the chemistry between Jem and Scout, "Jem, please-" "Scout, I'm tellin' you for the least time, shut you trap or go home-I declare to the Lord you're gettin' more like a girl every day!"
- what Jem and Scout think of their father, "Jem and I found our father satisfactory: he played with us, read to us, and treated us with courteous detachment."
What's the effect of having the Finch children call their father by his first name? What does that suggest about their characters? About his? Their relationship? Do you know anyone who calls their parents by their first name? (Do you?)
- The effect of having the Finch children call their father by his first name was that it would distance their relationship, as if they weren't his father. It suggests that the characters aren't people that try to have close relationships with other people. No, I don't know anyone who calls their parents by their first name.
Why is Aunt Alexandra so obsessed with Old Family and Finch pride? What does she hope to accomplish by making Scout and Jem feel that as well?
How does family intersect with class in the novel?
